Substance Control Management Policy

    Substance Control Management Policy

Due to the alarming rate of controlled substance abuse/dependence, it has become necessary for physician practices to closely manage patient use of these forms of prescriptions
The Controlled Substance/Pain Medication/Narcotic Prescription Policy of BWMedMD is as follows:

    1. No controlled substance/pain medication/narcotic will be prescribed at the time of initial visit without proper documentation (i.e. discharge letter from prior PCP/Psychiatrist or Pain Specialist). With proper documentation, please note that only 7 days worth of medication will be dispensed at the provider’s discretion, and the patient must follow up with a Chronic Pain Specialist for subsequent short-term or long-term use of narcotic medications or with a Psychiatrist for benzodiazepine/CNS stimulant (example: Xanax, Adderall) medications.

    2. In the event of suspected or documented drug abuse, a prescription will not be issued and the patient may be discharged from care.

    3. In the event of suspected narcotic dependence, a referral to a Dependency Treatment Specialist can be made, at the patient's request.
